Potluck: A Postcard from the Past

Potluck: A Postcard from the Past

When Sherry Harris, author of the Sea Glass Saloon series set in a fictional Florida beach town in the panhandle, asked me if I’d like to have a vintage postcard from Miami, I ,of course, said YES! I mean coming on, duh, I am all about Miami after all.

I was expecting a lone card but what I got was a wonderful booklet of images–a true traveler’s souvenir. The postmark is from February 26, 1941 and the card is addressed to a Mr. & Mrs. White in Chelmsford, Mass. Inside, is a short note from a Virginia & Frank. “We are having a marvelous time. Can’t wait to tell you about it.”

Beyond the wonderful illustrations (that are so very technicolor in feel), there is a magic about holding a little piece of history, a piece of Miami memorabilia from 80 years ago. I wonder how Virginia & Frank’s lives changed later that year when the USA entered the war. Were either of them part of the armed forces? Did Frank fly off to fight Nazis? Did Virginia become a Rosie the Riveter? I don’t know their story, but I have a little bit of hometown pride that Miami gave them a wonderful vacation before the horrors of WWII came into their lives.

Thank you Sherry for the gift. I treasure it.
