Food Favs: More Smoked Fish Dip

Food Favs: More Smoked Fish Dip

Reading Raquel V. Reyes Monday post reminded me how much I like smoked fish spread. I always order it whenever we’re trying a new-to-us restaurant. I fell in love with the savory appetizer at the long-time favorite haunt, Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish. It’s been in St. Petersburg since 1951 at 1350 Pasadena Avenue, just before you reach the beaches. Freshly made every day, individually packaged saltine crackers accompany the spread.

When we moved to the downtown area a few decades ago, I discovered several additional sources, including Fourth Street Shrimp Shop, Casual Clam, and The Galley. But my new best favorite is a Stillwaters Tavern on Beach drive. The real secret is that the saltines are handmade – crispy, crunchy, salty, and delicious.

Now it doesn’t hurt at all that there is plenty of outdoor seating, prompt, courteous service, and a great selection of 20 draft beers. My current favorite is the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale.
