Food Finds: Grow Your Own

Since experiencing a minor yet annoying health issue at the end of 2020, I’ve decided to adopt a plant-based diet. That’s led to a lot of experiments in and out of the kitchen, including growing my own food.

Some efforts have been a total failure, like the time I planted twenty-four sweet potato slips in my backyard. After reading that sweet potatoes love the Florida climate with a bit of TLC, I lovingly watered and talked to my sweet potato vines, and was so excited when they exploded into a carpet of green leaves.

Months after I planted them, I dug them out of the ground. I couldn’t wait to roast some giant, homegrown sweet potatoes in the oven.

But they were the size of radishes. So disappointing.

My most successful and satisfying crop has been microgreens, aka sprouts. I buy seed quilts from Hamama, and growing them couldn’t be easier. I submerge them in water for about ten seconds, place them in a tray, and about eight days later, boom!

It’s nearly impossible to mess up. The company has various kinds of sprouts—kale, broccoli, wheatgrass, and my personal favorite, wasabi mustard—and you can sign up for a monthly delivery. 

The end result is a tasty, nutrient-dense plant! I use the sprouts in salads and on avocado toast. Unlike the sprouts you buy in the stores, which sometimes aren’t the freshest, these are crisp and flavorful. 

Best of all, they grow quickly, so if you have two trays of seed quilts, you can have sprouts almost all the time. Much easier than sweet potatoes!
